Lowrider: Ode to Io

11/11/10  ||  Butt-Beard

It’s always interesting when you find a record that seems misplaced in the store. I was browsing through the punk section and found this. It looked kinda cool and so I bought it. Once home I ripped it and didn’t think of listening to “Ode” for about 4 weeks. Well, I was pleasantly surprised. Lowrider play the type of music that is perfect for traveling. Their ability to create fuzzy and melodic desert rock track is what seperates this record from others.

Examples of the bands keen ear for melody and song structuring is highlighted in my personal favourite “Dust Settlin” which has a strong groove and a mighty chorus. The title track closes the album in instrumental style with the band demonstrating why this is not your average throw-away stoner album. It builds and broods. Its epic, full of fuzzy riffs and jamming and KILLER songwriting.

This is a great album and one that builds as it progresses. These Swedes don’t worry about hiding their Kyuss and Sabbath influences, they relive the golden days when metal wasn’t about Triple Rectos and who had the most gain and bitches, and give it a hint if their own style. The story doesn’t end happily though. Lowrider haven’t put out any new stuff since 2000. Well, here’s to them making some more records, and to buying misplaced records.
